Friends of Chess

02.11.18 - We are very grateful for a recent contribution to the 4NCL from the Friends of Chess.

The Friends of Chess was founded in 1969 with the express objective to provide funds to aid and initiate chess enterprises in ways which are perceived as making a difference. Given the wide-ranging objects there is no limit on the type of chess-related activity that can be supported. However, the majority of grants awarded in recent years have fallen into one of the following four categories; support for individuals seeking titles, support for events offering norm or rating opportunities, support for teams and support for players with disabilities.

If you are interested in becoming a Friend or finding out more, please contact the Treasurer, Simon Brown - .

4NCL International Congress - to celebrate 25 years of the 4NCL

Congratulations to British KO qualifiers: GM Simon Williams & GM Matthew Turner.

06.11.18 - During a routine Anti-Cheating check by the arbiting team during the 1st 4NCL International, a player was found to have used electronic means to assist them with their games.

After further investigation, that player was subsequently disqualified from the tournament. The details have been forwarded to the FIDE Fair Play Commission, and consequently it is not possible to comment further on the case at this time.

We have received a number of questions about the scores of the players in the tournament. Page 13 of the FIDE Anti-Cheating Guidelines, which are binding on us given the tournament is FIDE-rated, say the following:

“In an individual Open tournament, the offender shall be excluded from the final ranking. Each of the offender’s games shall be considered a loss, but the score for the opponent shall remain unchanged. All games shall be reported as unplayed.”

None of the 8 games played by the player have been submitted for FIDE rating, and they will not be submitted for ECF grading.

Alex Holowczak - Chief Arbiter, 1st 4NCL International

Guildford extend their record unbeaten run in 4NCL to 66 matches - Leonard Barden

11 May 2018

The Surrey team won all 11 matches this season to make it 64 wins and two draws since they ended Wood Green’s dominance in 2012-13

Guildford are still the chess kings at the end of another 4NCL (Four Nations Chess League) season. The Surrey team won all its 11 matches and overcame its Midlands rival Cheddleton 5½-2½ in Monday’s final fixture. The losers at least got closer than in 2017, when Guildford’s margin was 6½-1½ and they had a round to spare.

This was Guildford’s sixth successive championship, achieved with an overall total of 64 wins and two draws in 66 matches. The 2012-13 season, when Guildford ended Wood Green’s long reign, is a distant memory. Its cosmopolitan squad includes the England Olympiad grandmasters Matthew Sadler and Gawain Jones, three highly rated GMs from France, and the former world champion Antoaneta Stefanova on the women’s board. Just to make sure on the final weekend, they fielded another top Bulgarian, Ivan Cheparinov, as a wildcard.

News - Mike Truran

08.2.18 - We have a couple of exciting developments to share with you (well, we think they are).

  1. We’re holding a new seven-round Spring Bank Holiday congress on Friday 25 - Monday 28 May at Basingstoke Country Hotel. See links on the top menu.

  2. We’ve been working with our friends at Bridge Overseas to develop the concept of an overseas congress/holiday, and I’m pleased to be able to tell you that this has now been arranged for Thursday 11 – Wednesday 17 October at Hotel Mangalan, La Manga, Spain. There's more information here. As well as the attractions of some late Mediterranean sun in a popular Spanish resort, we have also secured the exclusive services of Grandmaster Keith Arkell for the week.

I don’t usually advertise non-4NCL events, but as Alex Holowczak is instrumental in making the 4NCL congresses happen I will, if I may, take the liberty of drawing the following event that he is organising to your attention:

Midland Open Junior Championships: This congress will be held on Tue to Thu 3rd-5th April at Kenilworth School, Leyes Lane, Kenilworth CV8 2DA. Further details and entry here.

The inaugural Midlands Rapid & Blitz organised by the MCCU took place in Walsall on 17-18 February. There were four Rapidplay sections and one Blitz section, each with 9 rounds, and a prize fund of £2,680.

Back-to-back 4NCL victories make it 46 in a row for dominant Guildford - L Barden

Friday 17 November 2017

The Surrey team won their first two matches of the 4NCL season 8-0 and 7½-½, with Matthew Sadler the only member of the team who dropped half a point.

The Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) began its new season at Telford last weekend where it left off, with a new demonstration of Guildford’s supremacy.

The Surrey team, replete with grandmasters, took their opening matches by 8-0 and 7½-½ and have now won 46 matches in a row in a sequence stretching back to 2012-13. Read more ...
