Guildford extend their record unbeaten run in 4NCL to
66 matches
- Leonard Barden
11 May 2018
The Surrey team won all 11 matches this season to make it 64
wins and two draws since they ended Wood Green’s dominance
in 2012-13
Guildford are
still the chess kings at the end
of another 4NCL (Four Nations
Chess League) season. The Surrey
team won all its 11 matches and
overcame its Midlands rival
Cheddleton 5½-2½
in Monday’s final fixture. The
losers at least got closer than
in 2017, when Guildford’s margin
was 6½-1½ and they had a round
to spare.
This was
Guildford’s sixth successive
championship, achieved with an
overall total of 64 wins and two
draws in 66 matches. The 2012-13
season, when Guildford ended
Wood Green’s long reign, is a
distant memory. Its cosmopolitan
squad includes the England
Olympiad grandmasters Matthew
Sadler and Gawain Jones, three
highly rated GMs from France,
and the former world champion
Antoaneta Stefanova on the
women’s board. Just to make sure
on the final weekend, they
fielded another top Bulgarian,
Ivan Cheparinov, as a wildcard.

you (well, we think they
are).
We’re holding a new

Friday 25 - Monday 28
May at Basingstoke

I’m pleased to be able
to tell you that this
has now been arranged
for Thursday 11 –

take the liberty of drawing
the following event that he

Back-to-back 4NCL victories make it 46 in a row for
dominant Guildford
- L Barden
Friday 17 November 2017
The Surrey team won their first two matches of the 4NCL
season 8-0 and 7½-½, with Matthew Sadler the only member of
the team who dropped half a point.
The Four Nations
Chess League (4NCL) began its
new season at Telford last
weekend where it left off, with
a new demonstration of
Guildford’s supremacy.
The Surrey team,
replete with grandmasters, took
their opening matches by 8-0 and
7½-½
and have now won 46 matches in a
row in a sequence stretching
back to 2012-13.

Dominant Guildford win every match on way to fifth
successive 4NCL title
- Leonard Barden
Friday 5 May 2017 17.45 BST
The Surrey team have an overall record of 53 wins and two
draws from 55 matches since they broke the supremacy of Wood
Green in the 2012-13 season.
Eat your heart
out, Chelsea. The 4NCL (Four
Nations Chess League) has just
completed the season with
Guildford once again totally
dominant. The Surrey team won
all its 11 matches, retained the
title with a round to spare and
crushed its Midlands rival
Cheddleton 6½-1½ in Monday’s
final fixture.
This was
Guildford’s fifth successive
championship success, achieved
with an overall total of 53 wins
and two draws in 55 matches. The
4-4 draw against Wood Green in
2012-13 was a titanic battle at
the end of a season in which
Guildford ended the Middlesex
team’s long-running supremacy.

Rounds 1 and 2
Rank the existing teams
by 4NCL order from the previous season.
Separately rank the new teams. Pair two
rounds of balanced pairings, with no new
team playing another new team.
Rounds 3
and 4
Rank all the
teams into 4NCL order and then
do two rounds of balanced
pairings in which no further
account is taken of previously
earned points.
Rounds 5
to 11
The pairings for
subsequent rounds will be done,
round by round, using the normal
principles of a seeded Swiss,
using match points to define
score levels and game points to
act as the main discriminator
within a score level.

06.5.16 - The
other day we announced that
two norms had been achieved, those of James
Adair and Matthew Wadsworth.
It has now become apparent that
we published based on incomplete
information and, in fact, 5
norms were achieved in all.
Apologies to those who were left
out of the original post! The
full list of norms are
below:
GM Norms
ENG James Adair (White Rose) –
3rd and final GM norm. Rating
required.
ENG Yang-Fan Zhou
(Guildford) – 2nd GM norm.
IM Norms
ENG James Jackson (Barbican) –
2nd IM norm.
ENG Matthew
Wadsworth (Guildford) – 1st IM
norm.
IRL David Fitzsimons (Wood
Green) – 1st IM norm.
James Adair achieved his 3rd GM
norm and will qualify for the
Grandmaster title once his ELO
grading reaches 2500. His
present Elo is 2474, but given
his recent form it is likely he
will soon reach 2500 and beyond.
Yang-Fan Zhou got his second GM
norm which is a great
achievement in itself, but even
more so given that not only did
he have to face strong
opposition throughout 4NCL, but
he was feeling very unwell
during last weekend’s games.
Congratulations are also due to
James Jackson, who received his
2nd IM norm, and Matthew
Wadsworth his first. Both are
very promising young players,
have a very good chance of
achieving the IM title soon and
have the potential to build on
these successes and be on course
for GM results.
We also extend
our congratulations to David
Fitzsimons from Ireland who
qualified for his first IM norm.

Behind the scenes at the 4 Nations Chess League
by WIM Fiona Steil-Antoni
30.3.16
-
You've probably heard something about the mysterious "4NCL"
tournament, but did you know that that British chess league
features dozens of teams and over 800 players? WIM Fiona
Steil-Antoni is the captain of a team including the likes of
David Howell and Simon Williams, and gives us a glimpse
behind the scenes of the event before the final weekend of
the 2015-16 season.
Ever since I made my 4NCL debut in February 2011, this has
been one of my favourite events. But before I go any
further, let’s start with a bit of history and an
introduction to what the 4NCL actually is, as I often get
the impression it's one of the lesser-known leagues in
Europe.

Simon Williams too fired up in 4NCL

too creative for his own
good -
here is a good example.
As mentioned,
second-placed Cheddleton
won both matches in the

although they could only
manage 4½-3½ against

Lavishly backed
Guildford expected to
cruise to 4NCL league
title
- Leonard Barden
10.4.15
-
Britain’s 4NCL league
heads for its final
weekend next month with
Guildford set to win by
a distance. The battle
at the top has always
been partly financial,
as backers of rival
teams fly in
grandmasters from across
Europe for key matches.
But this season
Guildford are way ahead
in the sponsorship
stakes, a Chelsea or
Manchester City
equivalent facing
moderately bankrolled
rivals. The effect was
highlighted in last
Saturday’s Guildford v
Oxford match, where the
Surrey club’s rating
average of 2533,
middling GM level, was
around 360 points higher
than the mixture of
academics, juniors and
locals who took to the
board for the Dark
Blues.
